How to prepare soil for sod

Remove existing vegetation
Start by removing any existing grass, weeds, rocks, or debris from where you plan to lay sod. Ensure that the area is clean and free of any obstructions.
Test the soil
Conduct a soil test to determine the pH level and nutrient content of your soil. This will help you determine if any amendments are needed to create optimal growing conditions for your sod.
Adjust soil pH
If the soil test indicates that your soil’s pH is too high (alkaline) or too low (acidic), you may need to adjust it. Lime can be added to raise pH, while sulfur or aluminum sulfate can lower it.
Improve soil structure

Gently compact your soil

After laying the sod, water thoroughly to ensure good contact between the roots and the soil. Keep your newly laid sod consistently moist for the first few weeks to encourage root growth. Your roots should be established in about a month, at which point you can gradually reduce the frequency of watering and begin regular lawn maintenance to maintain a healthy lawn.
